Advocacy for a sustainable future and training future architects lie at the intersection of four decades of architectural experience and passion for improving the community's lived experience. Below are some of the examples for which Mr. Mitchell engages in the community.
Leadership in Sustainability
Mr. Mitchell serves on the Green Building Initiative Board of Directors, and is currently immediate past Board Chair. Throughout his design career, Mr. Mitchell recognized the importance of equitable, diverse, inclusive and sustainable design practices in the built environment. As an early adopter of sustainable rating systems, Mr. Mitchell is also a LEED Accredited Professional and his sustainable credentials continue with his certification as a Green Globes Assessor with the Green Globes Initiative. In 2021, Rich received the distinguished honor as Green Globes Fellow.
Design Studio & Practice Faculty
NewSchool of Architecture & Design
Mr. Mitchell serves as Adjunct Faculty, Architecture Programs at the NewSchool of Architecture & Design in San Diego, California. The architecture department at NewSchool is rich in diversity and creativity. With international faculty prominent in the field, students are exposed to many different approaches to design and innovation and master the same industry standard technology in the classroom that is used in the workplace. Mr. Mitchell is engaged with the Integrated Design Studio and the Practice Studio with 4th year students.
